Anthropic May Secure Meta's Excess AI Compute

According to The Decoder, Meta is in talks to lease the excess AI compute capacity sitting in its data centers to Anthropic. Anthropic has surfaced as the first major counterparty for CEO Zuckerberg's plan to sell or lease surplus GPUs to outside parties.

Meta has amassed enormous GPU fleets for its own AI, such as the Llama series, but not all of them are running at all times. The deal would let Meta monetize idle resources, while Anthropic — a competitor — would gain access to massive training and inference capacity. If it goes through, it could become the starting point of a GPU resale market operated by hyperscalers.

The deal is still at the negotiation stage, and neither the contract size nor its duration has been disclosed.

Databricks Reaches a $188B Valuation

According to TechCrunch, Databricks has reached a valuation of $188 billion (roughly ¥28 trillion). Originally known for data lakes and Spark, the company has completely repositioned itself as an AI infrastructure company, rapidly raising its profile in AI through research out of UC Berkeley, in-house models from the MosaicML acquisition, and cost-comparison studies leveraging open-weight models.

In research the company released, properly fine-tuned open-weight coding models can hold a significant cost advantage over proprietary APIs. For companies looking to compress their AI budgets, Databricks' approach apparently comes across as a pragmatic option.

Netflix Buys Ben Affleck-Linked AI Company for $587M

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has acquired an AI startup involving Ben Affleck for $587 million (roughly ¥88 billion). The price tag is one point of interest, but the more significant one is that a major streaming service has brought an AI production pipeline itself in-house.

Netflix had reportedly already used generative AI in around 300 titles. This acquisition suggests a shift from the “using AI” stage to the “owning AI production capability as an asset” stage. With actors' and screenwriters' concerns over AI persisting in Hollywood, how far platform-led AI production will go is becoming the focal point.

Kaiser Nurses Warn That AI Is Making Care Worse

Nurses at Kaiser Permanente in California are warning that the rollout of AI and workplace surveillance technology is degrading their work and the quality of patient care (via Local News Matters, 50 points on Hacker News). Specifically, they say time with patients shrinks as they scramble to process the judgments AI puts forward, and that psychological strain is rising as surveillance tools get used as productivity metrics.

Medical AI is being tested not only on accuracy and regulation but also on how it gets integrated into working conditions on the front lines. Similar complaints keep surfacing in retail and logistics, and wariness of the “AI-driven staffing cuts → heavier load on the remaining staff” pattern is intensifying.

Mind Shield: A Browser Extension That Protects “Critical Thinking” from LLMs

Mind Shield, posted to Hacker News as a Show HN, is a locally running browser extension that keeps users from being passively dragged along by AI opinions while they engage with LLM output. Its approach includes throwing alerts on the text being displayed — “this is an area you should still think through yourself” — and delaying UI elements that demand instant answers.

It is stirring debate as an approach to protecting cognitive autonomy, the polar opposite of the fashionable “boost productivity with AI” pitch. Applications in educational contexts and writing tools are envisioned. The implementation is simple, but as a design philosophy it points in an interesting direction: deliberately preserving the “slowness of human thought.”

An Attempt to Quantify the Uncertainty of LLM Judges

“Getting LLMs to Quantify their Unknowns,” which gained traction on Reddit's LocalLLaMA subreddit, examines methods for calibrating the “confidence” of judgments when using LLMs as evaluators (judges). Once an LLM judge can correctly say “I'm not confident about this one,” a semi-supervised pipeline becomes possible in which humans review only the low-confidence samples.

With LLM judges spreading rapidly in model evaluation and data quality control, confidence calibration carries substantial practical significance. Whether models can handle “confidence per judgment” rather than mere benchmark numbers looks likely to become key to keeping LLMs in production.
