Apple Releases iOS 27 Public Beta — AI-Enhanced Siri Now Open to Everyone
On July 14, Apple released the public beta of iOS 27. This means users can now try the new, dramatically AI-enhanced Siri on their iPhone without a developer registration. The official release is scheduled for this fall.
Until now, the new Siri had only been available in the developer beta, but with the start of the public beta, more users get early access to the latest Apple Intelligence features. It is seen as a major step in Apple's effort to catch up with rivals in the AI assistant space.
OpenAI's First Hardware Device Is a "Portable Speaker Without a Screen"
According to Bloomberg, OpenAI's first hardware device in development is expected to be a portable, screenless speaker-style AI companion. Designed around voice-first interaction, it reportedly aims to blend naturally into users' living spaces.
OpenAI has been known as a software company, so its entry into the device space carries significant strategic weight. By embodying the AI assistant as voice-centric hardware, the company appears to be pursuing new forms of interaction that go beyond the smartphone.
Gemma-4-31B-AntiHal — A Model That Pushes Back on False Premises
An "AntiHal" build of Gemma-4-31B with built-in hallucination countermeasures was announced in the LocalLLaMA community on Reddit. Ordinary LLMs tend to go along with false premises embedded in user questions, but AntiHal is designed to detect nonexistent APIs, fabricated papers, and the like, and point out that "this information is incorrect."
Technically, it adopts a method that adds steering coefficients to specific layers without any training. By applying strong steering only to the first ~24 tokens and then gradually decaying it, the model roughly doubles its resistance to hallucinations while keeping benchmark performance nearly intact. It maintains 77% on MATH-500 and 55% on LiveCodeBench, and because it is not a safety filter, it does not increase the refusal rate either.
Microsoft's AI Expansion Drives 25% Increase in Carbon Emissions
According to Forbes, Microsoft's AI infrastructure expansion has increased the company's carbon emissions by 25% year over year. Data center power consumption required for training and inference of AI models is cited as the primary factor.
As the AI race intensifies, the environmental footprint of tech companies is reaching a level that can no longer be ignored. Combined with New York State's decision to pause data center construction, the sustainability of the AI industry is emerging as a very real issue. Microsoft has set decarbonization as a goal, but balancing growing AI investment with environmental targets is proving far from easy.
Apple Sues OpenAI for Trade Secret Theft — The Issue Is "Movement of Information," Not "Freedom to Change Jobs"
On July 10, Apple filed a lawsuit in federal court against OpenAI and two of its former employees for trade secret theft. According to an explanatory article published on Qiita, the focus of the lawsuit is not "freedom to change jobs" itself, but the movement of information taken out during their employment.
As the fight over AI talent intensifies, the risk of information leakage accompanying moves to competitors has become a serious concern for companies. The case is drawing attention as a significant test of where the line between secrecy and talent mobility should be drawn in the AI industry.
Google Strengthens On-Device AI for Pixel 10 — Gemma 4 E2B and Tensor SDK
At Google I/O Connect India, Google announced its on-device AI strategy for the Pixel 10 family. The highlights are the lightweight model "Gemma 4 E2B" and a Tensor SDK beta that runs on the Pixel 10's custom Tensor SoC/TPU, signaling that fully on-device AI processing without going through the cloud is getting underway in earnest.
From the perspectives of privacy and latency, the importance of on-device AI keeps growing. Google's move to combine its own chips with lightweight models suggests it is trying to build a mobile AI experience that can rival Apple Intelligence on the iPhone.
