Qualcomm to Acquire AI Chip Software Startup Modular for Approximately $4 Billion

On June 24, Qualcomm announced that it will acquire Modular, an AI chip software company, for approximately $4 billion (around 600 billion yen). Modular is one of the most closely watched chip software startups in the AI space, offering a platform that streamlines AI workloads across different chip architectures.

The acquisition is seen as a move to strengthen Qualcomm's competitiveness in the edge AI and data center AI markets. With NVIDIA holding an overwhelming share of the GPU ecosystem, Qualcomm is aiming to differentiate itself through the software layer.

Baidu's "Unlimited-OCR": Dozens of Pages Processed in a Single Inference Pass

On June 23, Baidu released a new OCR model, "Unlimited-OCR." Its standout feature is the ability to process documents spanning dozens of pages in a single forward pass (inference).

Conventional end-to-end OCR models generate one token at a time, and as pages progress, the KV cache balloons, slowing down processing. Unlimited-OCR solves this with a new attention mechanism called "Reference Sliding Window Attention (R-SWA)." Image tokens remain exposed to all tokens for reference purposes, while generated text attends only to a sliding window of the most recent 128 tokens.

The model is built on DeepSeek-OCR, inheriting its encoder and image compression technology while replacing the attention layers in the decoder with R-SWA. It uses a MoE configuration with 3B total parameters and 500M active parameters per token. It is reported to achieve 93.92% on OmniDocBench v1.6 (compared to 87.01% for DeepSeek-OCR v1.5). It is available on Hugging Face under the MIT license.

Qwen's "AgentWorld": A Benchmark Putting Agents' Environmental Understanding to the Test

The Qwen team has released "AgentWorldBench," a comprehensive evaluation benchmark for Language World Models, along with a baseline model, "Qwen-AgentWorld-35B-A3B."

AgentWorldBench is built from the trajectories of frontier models on existing benchmarks such as Tool Decathlon, Terminal-Bench, and OSWorld-Verified, and contains a total of 2,170 samples. It spans seven domains — MCP, search, terminal, SWE, Android, Web, and OS — with each evaluation turn paired with ground-truth observations obtained through actual environment execution.

Benchmark results for Qwen-AgentWorld-35B-A3B have become a hot topic in Reddit's r/LocalLLaMA community. Despite being a 35B-parameter model (3B active), it records scores above Qwen3.5-397B-A17B in the SWE and OS domains, delivering top-tier performance among open models overall. Some are calling it "the No. 1 local agent model."

Azure Copilot Observability Agent Reaches GA, Ushering in the Next Phase of Agentic Cloud Operations

Microsoft Azure has moved Azure Copilot's Observability Agent to general availability (GA). The agent continuously analyzes telemetry from across the environment — including application topology, dependencies, and baseline behavior — making it possible to identify patterns and start investigations before problems occur.

KPMG reports that deploying the Observability Agent has saved "approximately 250 engineering hours per month." Microsoft has also announced the public preview of the Azure Resource Manager MCP Server, enabling AI agents to access cost and usage data through a standardized interface.

AI Bubble Debate: SoftBank's Son Calls It "Blasphemy" as Big Tech's Investment Climbs to $2.7 Trillion

Debate over the sustainability of AI investment is intensifying. On June 24, SoftBank's Masayoshi Son dismissed the AI bubble argument as "blasphemy against AI." Meanwhile, Big Tech's cumulative AI-related investment has reached $2.7 trillion (approximately 400 trillion yen), and some observers say "the bill has come due."

In an interview on June 24, Reid Hoffman also offered harsh assessments, calling SpaceX "not an AI company" and xAI "a complete failure," underscoring how divided opinions remain both inside and outside the AI industry.
