OpenAI Acquires Ona to Enable Long-Running Agents in Codex
On June 11, OpenAI announced the acquisition of Ona, a cloud environment provider. The goal is to expand the Codex platform, using secure, persistent cloud environments to enable long-running AI agents across entire enterprise workflows.
Codex has so far centered on code generation and execution, but Ona's technology will provide environments where agents can keep operating over extended periods. In other words, the move appears aimed beyond one-off coding assistance, setting its sights on automating multi-step business processes.
Details such as the acquisition price and timing remain undisclosed, but the deal is drawing attention as an infrastructure push to enable "persistent execution" of AI agents.
Bezos's Prometheus Raises $12 Billion at a $41 Billion Valuation
Prometheus, the AI startup founded by Jeff Bezos last November, has completed a $12 billion funding round, reaching a valuation of $41 billion. The major follow-on round comes just seven months after the company raised $6.2 billion in its seed round.
However, Prometheus has yet to unveil a product. Bezos has said it is "too early" to share details. The scale of the valuation attached to a company without a product has reignited market debate over where the AI bubble is heading.
OpenAI vs Anthropic: Signs of a Token Price War
According to a Wall Street Journal report, OpenAI is considering lowering its API token prices to pull customers away from Anthropic. The two companies compete head-to-head in the enterprise AI services market, and price competition could intensify.
The move suggests that, with the cost of using AI models trending downward, differentiation among providers is starting to hinge on price. While developers stand to benefit from lower costs, there is also keen interest in how margin pressure will affect service quality.
AWS Open-Sources Agent-EvalKit
AWS has released Agent-EvalKit, an open-source toolkit for systematically evaluating AI agents. It is available under the Apache 2.0 license.
Traditional software testing focuses on verifying that outputs match, which has proven insufficient for AI agents that autonomously select and execute tools. Agent-EvalKit traces the agent's entire execution path across six evaluation phases, detecting problems hidden behind the output, such as hallucinations and skipped verification steps.
It integrates with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Kiro CLI, and Kilo Code, and samples using the Strands Agents SDK and Amazon Bedrock are also provided. The release signals that reliability evaluation of AI agents has entered the practical stage.
Deezer Releases a Free AI Music Detection Tool for All Platforms
Deezer, the music streaming service, has released a free tool for detecting AI-generated music. It can scan playlists on major platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music and identify AI-generated tracks.
With AI-generated music surging on streaming services, listeners and artists have been looking for ways to verify where tracks come from. Notably, Deezer opened the tool not only to its own service but also to users of competing platforms.
Identification technology for AI-generated content is seeing growing demand not just in music but also in images and text, and it could influence future standardization efforts.
AI Infrastructure's Environmental Toll Comes Into Focus as UK Grid Reservation Hoarding Becomes a Problem
AI data center infrastructure is creating new environmental and energy challenges. Amazon revealed that its data centers use 2.5 billion gallons (roughly 9.5 billion liters) of water per year. Cooling water consumption is expected to expand further as AI workloads grow.
Meanwhile, Ofgem, the UK's energy regulator, has warned that data center operators are reserving large amounts of grid capacity far in advance of actual demand. This "capacity hoarding" is reportedly leaving other new projects stuck waiting for grid connections for extended periods.
A picture is coming into sharp focus: the infrastructure underpinning the AI industry's rapid growth is running into sustainability challenges on both the water and power grid fronts.
