OpenBMB Releases MiniCPM5-1B, a 1B-Parameter Model That Achieves SOTA
OpenBMB has released MiniCPM5-1B, a 1B-parameter Transformer model, as the first installment of the MiniCPM5 series. Designed for on-device, local deployment, and resource-constrained environments, it achieves SOTA compared to open-source models in the same size class (LFM2.5-1.2B, Qwen3-0.6B/think, Qwen3.5-0.8B/think, and others).
It reportedly shows particularly strong advantages in tool use, code generation, and challenging reasoning tasks. It also features built-in hybrid inference, allowing a single checkpoint to switch between a fast assistant mode and a deliberate reasoning mode. It supports a context length of 131,072 tokens and works with major inference frameworks including vLLM, SGLang, and Transformers. It is available under the Apache-2.0 license.
Starbucks Rethinks Its AI Adoption as Meta and Intuit Cut a Combined 11,000 Jobs
According to Forbes, Starbucks has announced a shift in its AI adoption strategy. The article is paywalled, but the move to reassess its use of AI is drawing attention. At the same time, Meta and Intuit have implemented layoffs totaling roughly 11,000 people, once again fueling debate over how AI-driven efficiency is affecting employment.
While AI adoption continues to advance, some companies are finding the results fall short of expectations — a sign that we are entering a phase of figuring out what AI is genuinely useful for, rather than adopting it simply because it is AI.
Pope Leo XIV Calls for AI "Disarmament" in First Major Encyclical
Pope Leo XIV has called for AI to be "disarmed" in his first major encyclical since taking office. Reported by the BBC, the statement is drawing attention as a message from the highest level of the religious world on the ethical and societal impact of AI.
Themed around AI safety and the protection of human dignity, the encyclical is seen as a message urging responsible AI use not only to the technology community but to society at large.
Norway Builds LLM Training Infrastructure with 2-Petabyte Huawei Flash Storage
It has been reported that Norway is deploying 2 petabytes of Huawei flash storage to build infrastructure for training large language models. The story has drawn interest, gathering 30 points and 24 comments on Hacker News, and is being watched as part of Europe's push toward AI infrastructure independence.
LLM training requires enormous data-processing throughput, and the large-scale flash storage deployment appears aimed at eliminating I/O bottlenecks. The fact that the hardware is from Huawei has also sparked geopolitical debate.
"Slop Hammer": An AI-Generated Text Detection Tool Fine-Tuned from Qwen 0.8B
A member of the LocalLLaMA community on Reddit has released an AI-generated text detection model, built by fine-tuning Qwen 3.5 0.8B on Pangram's dataset. Available as a Chrome extension called "Slop Hammer," it can determine locally, in under a second, the probability that selected text is AI-generated.
The author reports spending roughly 20 hours fine-tuning on an RTX 3090, and that the 0.8B model delivered the best results compared to Qwen 2B and Gemma 4. The model is about 400MB and can be downloaded from Hugging Face in ONNX format.
