NVIDIA CEO Urges Super Micro to Strengthen Compliance — Taiwan Records Its First Semiconductor Smuggling Bust
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has called on partner Super Micro Computer to strengthen its compliance framework, following Taiwan's first-ever crackdown on semiconductor smuggling.
Taiwanese authorities this week detained three people for filing false declarations related to AI servers manufactured by Super Micro. It marks the first enforcement action against semiconductor smuggling in Taiwan. The backdrop is the United States' tightened export controls on high-performance chips such as NVIDIA's AI accelerators to China. Since the regulations took effect, concerns had been growing that the island could become a breeding ground for smuggling routes.
Speaking to reporters after arriving in Taipei, Huang said NVIDIA explains the regulations to all of its partners "rigorously." As US-China tech friction begins to reach the far ends of the semiconductor supply chain, compliance frameworks are once again under scrutiny.
